The vice-chancellor, Prof Ezra Maritim, chaired a senate meeting but could not convince the workers' representatives to call off the strike.
Workers at the university's health centre broke ranks with their colleagues and reported on duty despite the strikers' threats.
The dairy processing plant was closed while drivers and sweepers stayed away from their work stations.
The more than 3,000 employees want a salary increment, allowances and other perks.
At the same time, the university yesterday clarified that it had not allowed the students to plant crops on its farms in Njoro, Laikipia and Kisii.
Its official said the institution was growing the crops to ensure that students got food at a subsidised cost to discourage them from cooking in halls of residence.
