This is expected to reduce the cost of food at the university's dining halls.
Students would also stop cooking in their halls of residence if food was cheap in the kitchens.
Vice-Chancellor Ezra Maritim says in a report that food prices were relatively lower than in other universities as students were allowed to grow their own food.
Out of the university's Sh5 million monthly electricity bill, the halls of residence, where some students cook, account for Sh2 million. Students use electric hot plates to cook, he says.
The University has 8,887 students but can only accommodate 6,275 at any one time, resulting in a shortfall of 2,608. This forces the University to employ the three-semester relay system.
The buildings whose construction stalled 15 years ago, will accommodate about 2,500 students on completion.
