Settle farmers or risk famine, warns MP

The Government has been asked to fast-track the resettlement of internally displaced people in their former homes.

West Mugirango MP James Gesami said the majority of those displaced were farmers and unless they were resettled, the country was likely to be hit by famine.

Speaking during his homecoming party at Gianchore primary school, Dr Gesami said the Government should also compensate all post-election violence victims.

He said calm had returned in the country, and it was vital for the Government to ensure that every Kenyan was provided with security to participate in development. He criticised Nyeri residents who burnt effigies of US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger and British High Commissioner Adam Wood and flags of the diplomats’ countries.

“All we want as Kenyans is peace and any group or individuals whose acts are likely to jeopardise the peace initiative spearheaded by world leaders should be disowned,” he said.

He said this was not the time for leaders in Government and PNU supporters to continue with their political hard-line stance considering that many lives had been lost following the presidential elections.
