Area police boss Anderson Wambugu said the Land Rover , registration number KAQ 138E, was impounded from a Kanu politician Mr Richard Onyonka.
Mr Wambugu explained that the impounded vehicle was among others wanted by the government. But reached for comment , Mr Onyonka denied ever being a member of the outlawed sect.
He said he was given the vehicle by the Kanu headquarters to enable him carry out his campaigns for the Kitutu Chache parliamentary seat.
Mr Onyonka was a runners up to Mr Jimmy Angwenyi (Ford People) who won the seat.
Mr Onyonka said he was surprised to learn that police were holding the vehicle in connection with the Mungiki sect, saying, "police told me they were investigating a campaign violence between my supporters and those of Hon Angwenyi. He said Mr Angwenyi's supporters had attacked his convoy and smashed its windscreen.
"I expect the police to return the vehicle to me soon after finishing their investigations" he said. Mr Onyonka told the Nation on telephone that he was looking forward to using the vehicle until asked to return it to the Kanu headquarters. The police, on the other hand, said the vehicle will be driven back to the army barracks 'anytime this week'.
