Czechs to build dental department in Kenya

Prague, March 11 (CTK) - The Czech humanitarian organisation ADRA is preparing a number of projects to widen the health care for the population in Kenya, including a dental department in the village of Itibo, within three months, ADRA activists told CTK Tuesday. 

Itibo lies in the region Nyamira, hit by a wave of riots after the elections the opposition has called rigged.The department will be built within the existing health facility, which includes a maternity clinic.

The total costs of about one million crowns will be covered by the ADRA as well as individual donors.Along with the dental surgery, local patients will be able to use the widened services of the department. Along with basic care, special examination will be available to the patients."Moreover, treatment of internal patients will be developed. For this reason, the chief nurse of the cardiology department of the Pardubice hospital leaves for a three-month mission to Kenya," ADRA said. ADRA's representatives and Czech doctors are leaving for Kenya on Friday.

From this July, the ADRA will cooperate with students of Czech medical faculties who will go for educational stays to the health centre Itibo."They will study tropical diseases and make educational work at local schools," ADRA said.The region around Itibo is plagued with malaria, typhoid, internal parasites, AIDS and various respiratory diseases.Some 15 percent of the locals are infected with the HIV virus.

ADRA's staff flew to Kenya in 2005 in order to examine the local conditions and needs and to find the right place for a hospital. They selected a neglected health facility in Itibo in the densely populated part of Kenya. The maternity clinic with other departments now caters for the region with some 60,000 people.Riots have not stopped in Kenya since the December presidential elections, won again by Mwai Kibaki. ADRA said earlier this year that houses had been burnt, shops plundered and cars assaulted in Itibo.
