Gusii MPs want role in new coalition

Members of Parliament from Gusii have warned President Kibaki and ODM leader Raila Odinga against sidelining the community in Cabinet appointments.

The MPs said their community suffered most in the post-election chaos and deserved to be sufficiently compensated. Led by ODM treasurer Omingo Magara, the MPs said they want equal treatment by the coalition partners for bearing huge losses for the leaders’ sake.

“We exercised our right to vote for both Raila and Kibaki and no one should think of leaving us out of the Government,” said Mr Magara. The 10 MPs were visiting a camp with 1,300 displaced families in Ekerenyo, Nyamira District over the weekend.

The camp was set up a month ago to accommodate those fleeing fighting on the border of Sotik and Borabu districts. Said North Mugirango MP Wilfred Ombui: “As leaders from this community, we will expect the Government to reward us accordingly for the losses we have suffered since our people were evicted from their farms and businesses.”

Mr Ombui, in whose constituency the uprooted families’ camp falls, at the same time urged the government to compensate those adversely affected by the chaos. The MPs also want the Government to move fast and resettle the dislocated families, said Nyaribari Chache MP, Robert Monda. MPs present included Chris Obure (Bobasi), Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache) and Dr James Gesame (West Mugirango).
