Come Clean On Examinations Woes, Saitoti Told

Five MPs want Internal Security minister, Prof George Saitoti, to speak out on the KCSE examination fiasco. Mr Richard Onyonka, Dr Robert Monda, Mr Walter Nyambati, Mr Moriasi Ombui and Mr Charles Onyancha said Saitoti, who was Education minister last year, owed Kenyans an explanation.

"We want Saitoti, the PS Prof Karega Mutahi and others who were in office to own up instead of watching as (Education minister) Prof Sam Ongeri is harassed," said Onyonka.

Speaking on Sunday, the MPs said Ongeri had nothing to do with the problem. "Ongeri is being used in the lobbying for ministerial posts in the coalition Government," said Nyambati. Ombui said the minister deserved credit for admitting that there was a problem.

Meanwhile, pressure continues to pile on Ongeri to disband the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). In Trans Nzoia District, Kenya Union of Post-Primary Teachers (Kuppet) officials urged parents not to register their children for KCPE and KCSE examinations until the matter is sorted out.

Branch secretary, Mr Lusweti Furaha, said: "We have witnessed perhaps the biggest scandal in education." Last year's examination, Kuppet alleged, was leaked, saying some candidates bought papers a week before they were sat. Lusweti also claimed some students got questions through mobile phones. "Teachers have lost confidence in KNEC due to incompetence," he said.
