Ongeri joins fray for deputy PM

Education minister Sam Ongeri has expressed his interest in the post of deputy prime minister. Prof Ongeri said he deserved the seat to enable him represent the interests of Nyanza Province in the grand coalition. “To bring about regional balance, Nyanza should be considered and I think I will fit in the seat if I am appointed,” said the Nyaribari Masaba MP.

He added: “President Kibaki comes from Central Province, Nairobi will be covered by prime minister-designate Raila Odinga and Western will be represented by Musalia Mudavadi. Nyanza also deserves a slot.” Prof Ongeri was speaking at Chibwobi village in his constituency during the burial of Mzee Ezekiel Atutu.

He also told Kenyans to be patient as President Kibaki and Mr Odinga constituted a new-look Cabinet. Prof Ongeri is one of the 17 Cabinet ministers named earlier this year.He asked his constituents to pray for him to remain in the ministry when the Cabinet is reconstituted. President Kibaki is expected to meet Mr Odinga today in a bid to come up with a new Cabinet.
