Nyanza champs shine as Eastern pick their teams

All the defending Nyanza secondary schools champions Thursday sailed into Friday’s quarter-finals as the provincial competition entered its second day in Migori. Boys’ basketball champions, Maseno School, Raliew Girls (girls’ basketball), Lwak (girls’ hockey) and Kisumu Day (boys’ hockey) all stayed on course for successful title defences.

In Eastern Province, Mukaa Boys High School from Kibwezi district and St Angela’s Girls of Kitui won the basketball titles by overcoming strong opponents at Meru School Thursday.Mukaa came from 10 points down to defeat St Charles Lwanga 67-59 in a hotly-contested and thrilling final.

The Saints started the match on a high note and quickly opened the lead at 17-7 in the first quarter. In the girls’ category, St Angela’s from Kitui upset Kitise Secondary by defeating them 38-29 a day after the team from Makueni district had beaten them in the group stages.

In seven-a-side rugby, Meru School maintained their 100 per cent winning streak by defeating arch-rivals Chogoria High School and Machakos Boys. Chogoria will, however, join Meru School during the trip to Mang’u for the national tournament.

Meru School’s hockey team walloped Kabaa Boys’ 3-0 in the final to join Kisau Girls’ as the Eastern province representatives at the national tournament. In Kisumu, sevens rugby title holders, Maseno School, were destined to qualify to the last eight after recording two wins. In their first match at Uriri High School, Maseno defeated Nyamagwa 38-0 and also scored a 33-14 win over Nyabondo.

In boys’ basketball, Maseno, coached by Kenya Basketball Federation chairman, Paul Otula, hit rivals Kisumu Boys 47-22 to ensure they qualified to the quarters without losing a match.

Nyamira Technical, coached by Gilbert Omariba, also sailed into the quarters by thrashing hosts Migori 71-16. Cardinal Otunga High School and Ngere also made the quarters.

Girls basketball holders Raliew condemned Nyamira Technical to an early elimination after a 47-13 win. Moi Nyabohanse also qualified to the quarters when they walloped Tendere 54-4. Ahero Girls and Kisumu Girls also made it to the quarters.

Sega and Nyamira Girls also sailed to the quarters after recording wins over St Barnabas and Itierio respectively. Sega hit St Barnabas 37-9 while Nyamira thrashed Itierio 51-12. In girl’s hockey, Kereri, from Kisii District caused a major upset when they beat Kisumu Girls 3-1 to qualify to the quarters where they will face St Barnabas.

In another quarter, holders Lak will face a tricky tie against Dede while Ogande will play Kisumu Girls. In the last quarterfinal match, Nyawara will tackle Nyakach Girls.

In boy’s hockey, favourites Maseno School piped Ramba High to qualify to the quarters where they will play Ambira. Maseno thumped a hapless Kiabonyoru 10-0. Ambira notched a 2-0 win against Nyabondo to qualify to the last eight.

Holders Kisumu Day will face unpredictable Agoro Sare in the second quarterfinal match while Kisumu Boys will play Orero. In the last quarter final match, Mbita Boya will tackle St Joseph’s Rapogi.  Cross country will be held Friday, according to the Nyanza secondary schools sports association technical advisor Evans Eno Omari. The games will conclude tomorrow (Saturday).
