MPs call for action on displaced

Two MPs Thursday intensified pressure on the Government to speed up resettlement of internal refugees in Gusii region of Nyanza Province.

North Mugirango MP Wilfred Ombui and his Nyaribari Chache counterpart, Dr Robert Monda, said the Government should speed up the exercise as the longer it took, the more expensive it became.

Mr Ombui said the camps were crowded after refugees from various Kisii districts were relocated to Ekerenyo Division headquarters.

He also said the internal refugees faced an acute shortage of firewood. Mr Ombui said some refugees were willing to surrender their land in Rift Valley if they could be resettled elsewhere.

Sell land

“I appeal to the Government to sell land belonging to those who are willing to dispose of it and resettle them where their security can be guaranteed,” Mr Ombui said.

Echoing the same sentiments, Dr Monda said the biggest test the Cabinet faced was how to handle the resettlement and compensation of the internal refugees.

Dr Monda told refugees at Kisii municipal council offices where they had requested a meeting with mayor Sam Nyangeso, that resettlement and compensation should be done in as fair and humane manner as possible.
