Govt committed to resettling IDPs

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka Sunday asked leaders and the media to desist from obsessing themselves with the 2012 general elections and instead concentrate on spearheading the country's unity and development agenda.

Mr. Musyoka said it was too early for Kenyans to start talking about the next general elections at a time, when the country was still hosting the Internally Displaced Person's (IDPs) and recovering from the effects of the post election violence. He said what the country required now was ample time to allow the Grand Coalition government to embark on its national reconciliation and development agenda.

At the same time, Mr. Musyoka appealed to Kenyans to forget their differences that arose following the general elections and reach out to one another in forgiveness and reconciliation. "If President Mwai Kibaki, Raila Odinga and myself are working together in a Grand Coalition, there should be no reason any Kenyan should harbor ill will towards another", Mr. Musyoka said.

The Vice President was speaking at Ekerenyo in North Mugirango Constituency where he visited an IDP camp where the internally displaced persons are living. Saying that the government was committed to resettling IDPs, Mr. Musyoka asked the committees involved in the exercise to consider those in the camps as well as those staying with their relatives.

Mr. Musyoka expressed optimism that the anticipated Bill on Tribalism will be passed into law in order to promote nationalism and out law ethnic prejudices. Area Member of Parliament, Mr. Wilfred Ombui said the camp was hosting 1,400 IDPs and urged the government to hasten their resettlement. The function was also attended by Members of Parliament, Johnstone Muthama (Kangundo), Dr. Walter Nyambati (Kitutu-Masaba), Peter Mwathi (Kinangop) and Hon. Ngugi of Limuru and Nyanza Provincial Commissioner, Mr. Paul Olando.
