Nyabururu runner wins Nyanza zonal 10,000m race

Beautrice Ongeri of St Paul’s Nyabururu College ran a lone race to win the 10,000 metres race by a big margin during the Nyanza Zone teachers colleges games at Gusii Stadium Wednesday.

Ongeri led from start to finish to win in 44 minutes, 41.46 seconds ahead of Fridah Boinet of Kamagambo, who finished a distant second, more than four minutes later in 48:39.55. Ongeri also won the women’s 5,000 metres race. In the 5, 000m race, Ongeri clocked 20:49.27 to win the race.

Penina Njeri of Asumbi was second in 21:13.71 while the third position went to Esther Wambui of Migori in 22:05.75. Beatrice Kwamboka of St Paul’s won the women’s 1,500m race in a time of 7:20.62, beating Nancy Chebet of Nyanchwa to second place in 7:38.06 while the third place position went to Migori’s Irene Maina in 7:51.62. Joan Wanjala of Migori won the women’s 5,000m walk in 34:36.12, beating Nyanchwa’s Edith Chebet to second position in 35:39.21. Paskariah Chepto, also of Nyanchwa, finished third in a time of 36:02.34. Evans Onywa of St Paul’s Nyabururu won the men’s 1,500m race in 5:44.10.He was followed by Patrick Kamana of Matongo in 5:53.44 while the third spot went to Cheruyoit Peter of St Paul’s in 5:59.92.

Nicholas Koech of Asumbi won the men’s 10, 000m race in 34:18.15, narrowly beating pre-race favourite Edward Ongeri to second spot in 34:46.32. Jackson Ngolei of Kamagambo finished third in 34:47.20. Edwin Mwai Wanjiku of Nyanchwa clocked one hour, four minutes and 51 seconds to win the men’s 10,000m walk. Wanjiku beat Kamagambo’s Ezekiel Too to second position in 1:07.18 while Stanley Ng’eno, also of Nyanchwa, finished third in 1:09.39. Only three runners finished the race.

The three day event which brought together 500 students from Migori, St Magdalene, Nyanchwa, St Paul’s, Matongo and Asumbi colleges.
