Police said accomplices, arrested earlier, implicated the head teacher. They told the police that he was their ‘team leader’ and bankrolled their activities. Nyamira Officer Commanding Police Division Lawrence Njoroge Mwaura confirmed the arrests and said they were compiling evidence to prosecute the suspects.
Local Divisional Criminal Investigation Officer Jacob Muchai said a search in the head teacher’s house unearthed a gunny bag used to carry a rifle but the weapon was missing. They also recovered gun oil. On Friday, gunshots rent the air at Charachani village in Nyamira District as one of the suspects attempted to escape.
The operation has been extended to Bureti and Kericho districts where some youngsters who run errands for gangsters, such as ferrying barriers to the roads, are said to be hiding. Mwaura appealed to the public to volunteer information to help the police prosecute the criminals.
The crackdown comes in the wake of a public outcry that local police officers are dining with criminals and frustrating residents’ efforts to arrest them. Muchai said the thugs were also involved in theft of motor vehicles, which end up in the local markets. "We are also following up information that most vehicles on local roads have fake engines that were stolen elsewhere and tampered with," he added.
Elsewhere, seven students have been arrested for arson in Kisii District. Nyanza Provincial Police Officer Mr Anthony Kibuchi said the Cardinal Otunga High School students were arrested in connection with the May 3 fire incident at their school. Kibuchi said the suspects recorded a statement before the school’s board of governors and their parents on Thursday.
In Gucha District, a man died after he was electrocuted as he worked in his workshop. Kibuchi said Geoffrey Nyanumba was working on an electric drill when it malfunctioned. The incident occurred yesterday at around 4pm.
