A baptism of fire welcomed Mr Wilfred Moriasi Ombui to his new office as MP for North Mugirango /Borabu constituency, which lies partly in Nyamira and Borabu districts.
Even before he was sworn-in as MP, his constituents were entangled in fierce fighting with the Kipsigis neighbours. More than 50 people were killed, scores injured and property worth millions destroyed.
The MP says his intervention was needed at the battlefront to restore peace. His negotiating skills and those of MPs on the other side of the border — including Sotik’s the late Lorna Laboso, Mr Franklin Bett (Buret) and Mr Isaac Ruto (Chepalungu) — was put to test.
Residents of the vast North Mugirango/Borabu have credited Ombui for having stuck with them during times of distress, particularly at the volatile Borabu-Sotik border.
Ombui is addressing the plight of more than 1,700 IDPs at the troubled Ekerenyo camp.
The MP defied all odds to stick with Kanu, which was largely unpopular in the face of the ODM wave.
The MP, a former teacher and accountant, convinced voters to accept his party.
Ombui hopes to initiate economic development in North Mugirnago/Borabu through transparency, accountability and efficiency.
He also wants to reconcile his politically polarised constituents. The Borabu people, where the MP is a resident, are lobbying to be independent of North Mugirango. They have often accused former MPs of sidelining them.
Ombui says he will ensure the constituency remains peaceful.
"It is our duty to improve the well being of the North Mugirango/Borabu inhabitants. Indeed we can improve our lives, revive youth polytechnics, create employment and restore the integrity of our secondary schools," he says.
The MP says the constituency has been mismanaged and its resources looted through inequitable distribution.
"I have been given a chance to correct this mess. We must work to improve the lives of our people. It is not natural that we are poor," says Ombui.
As an accountant, Ombui says he will ensure every penny of the devolved funds is accounted for and used for intended projects.
He promises to accept sincere criticism, provide room for suggestions and address water, electricity and poor roads problems.
The MP also pledges to provide free advisory services on investment and career development.
"We will strive to ensure equality and fairness to all including youths and women by encouraging social equity and participation," he says.
He also seeks to reform both the constituency’s battered health and educational sector by involving all stakeholders and improvement of existing facilities.
Prior to his election to the august House, Ombui served as the General Manager at the Gusii Mwalimu Sacco for 10 years. He had also served as the Sacco’s chief accountant.
He taught at the Gusii Institute of Technology and various primary schools. The 53-year-old legislator was born in Boisanga in Nyamira District.
His went to Kenyoro Primary School, Kiabonyoro Secondary School for his A-levels and later joined Eregi Teachers Training College for his P-1 course.
He went for accounting courses in India and the UK before pursuing his masters in Business Administration in Finance at Egerton University. He completed the course last year.
