The police on Wednesday dug the grave in Kisii and retrieved the body. The mother had reported that the boy, 5, had disappeared in April, prompting officers at Gesoso Police Post to launch a search.
But on Wednesday, the suspect went to the station and withdrew her initial report, to her husband’s surprise.
Nyanza PPO Anthony Kibuchi said the father was stunned by the turn of events, adding that he had for two months believed his son was alive.
"The father had hopes of finding the boy but was shocked to discover that his wife had killed their only son and kept mum," said Kibuchi.
He said the suspect, who was in custody, confessed that she had hit her son with a stick, killing him.
"She then dug a grave in the plantation where she dumped the body without covering it," he added.
Kibuchi said the suspect would be charged with murder and concealing a felony.
Meanwhile, a man died while two others were admitted to a Kisii hospital in critical condition after a wall of a latrine caved in on them.
Kibuchi said the deceased, Joseph Adira, and his colleagues were digging a latrine at Kanga Boys High School before its wall collapsed on them.
Students rushed to save them, but one died on arrival at the Kisii District Hospital," he said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at 2pm.
Elsewhere, police are investigating a suspected arson attempt at a school in Nyamira District.
Kibuchi said students at Nyamayie Boys High School spotted fire from one of the dormitories, but contained it before it destroyed any property.
He said police later found a five-litre jerrican of petrol, which he suspected was intended to burn the dormitory.
The PPO said they were treating the case as an arson attempt, adding that investigation had begun.
