Karua dismisses her critics

Justice and constitutional affairs Minister Martha Karua is calling on her fellow legislators to support a motion to amend the local authorities act once tabled in Parliament.  Speaking in Kisii during the homecoming party for Kisii Mayor Samuel Nyangeso on Sunday, Karua said this will allow mayors and chairmen serve for a five year term.

Karua who is also the NARC Kenya chairperson maintained that her party will not be disbanded as recommended by the coalition of PNU leadership to pave way for the formation of a strong party. On her presidential ambition, Karua defended her desire to go for the presidency in 2012 saying it was not too early to do so.

She at the same time asked Kenyans to shun politicians who champion for politics of hatred, saying such leaders were out to create rifts among Kenyans. She said that dividing the country along ethnical lines was a dangerous for development. She regretted that the Kisii community suffered during the post election violence despite being neutral and extending their generosity by hosting displaced people from other communities.

Karua who has since expressed her interest in the 2012 presidency said that there was need for leaders to unite the country in the interest of its citizens instead of dwelling in cheap politics meant to thwart others from achieving their political ambitions. "I wonder what they mean when they ask me to wait for the right time; I discharge my ministerial assignments with diligence and I want to assure them that nothing can stop me from achieving my ambitions despite their political bickering." Karua said.

The Minister said that there was no provision anywhere for special groups who must vie for presidency and not others adding that all Kenyans were equal and have the right to exercise their democratic rights.

"I'm going to fight to the end and they should not think that their pressures would make me withdraw from the 2012 race." The minister quipped. The Minister was accompanied by her education counterpart prof. Sam Ongeri, assistant ministers Dr. James Gesami, Omingo Magara, Robison Githae, MPs Dr. Robert Monda Nyaribari chache, Walter Nyabati, Kitutu Masaba, Asman Kamama, Mayors and council chairmen from several parts of the republic.

Speaking during the ceremony, Prof. Sam Ongeri said that corporate parties that formed PNU must be respected saying that if it were not for the parties, PNU would have no political future. Ongeri told the gathering that the community had the capacity to determine who the next president would be adding that it deserved a fair deal in the distribution of national cake.

He asked the people to make their own decision when the time comes saying democracy would only be realized without any influence on the people.  Speaking earlier, Messrs Omingo Magara, Dr. Robert Monda James Gesami said the Kisii Community has been marginalized politically and yet it constitutes a reasonable number of votes.

The legislators unanimously agreed to strategize on the political direction of the community ahead of the 2012 to avoid repeating previous mistakes. Giving his thanks, Mayor Nyangeso said he was particularly impressed that Kenyan leaders have decided to join hands for the purpose of unity in this nation. Nyangeso said that the future of this nation entirely depended on the good will of all political leaders through preaching peace and stability.
