Tension row in Kisii-Nyamira over boundary. Is Nyachae still a factor?

Location triggers heated row over Nyamira/Borabu District boundary.  Tension is building over a boundary row between residents and leaders of Nyamira and Borabu districts. The residents and leaders have differed over Kiangeni location that each side claims due to its rich economic resources. Over 30 civic leaders from Nyamira district led by County Council chairman Charles Aumbi have vowed not to release the location to the newly created Borabu District.

During a meeting held at a Nyamira hotel, the leaders said when Masaba district was created, residents of the location in dispute refused to move and were allowed to remain in Nyamira.

Aumbi said the location was important to Nyamira due to the high revenue it accrues from the several tea estates. He accused a trader of inciting wananchi over the location. Another group led by Cllr Afayo Ngeresa, in whose ward the location falls, wants it taken back to Borabu where it initially belonged before it was relocated to Nyamira.

Ngeresa said area residents had agreed to remain in Nyamira because it was closer compared to Masaba where they had been moved. He said following the creation of Borabu, residents were more comfortable in Borabu than Nyamira. Before Borabu was created, the area was a division under Nyamira district and Kiengeni was a location in Borabu.

Area MP Wilfred Ombui hit out at Nyanza Provincial Commissioner Paul Olando claiming he was to blame for the dispute. Ombui claimed the PC was giving contradicting information on the area that he says should fall under Borabu against the wishes of the majority. The Kanu legislator also accused some unnamed people in the area of politicizing the matter and told them to keep off.
