Kisii varsity to receive Sh50m, say local MPs

The recently upgraded Kisii University College will soon receive Sh50 million for development purposes. Members of Parliament from the 10 constituencies in the larger Gusii region have agreed to donate the money to ensure upgrading of the institution. The MPs further agreed that university’s main campus be positioned at Simbauti farm in Borabu District to allow for future expansion. The institution was one of the campuses of Egerton Univerisity.

Speaking at the Kisii University premises yesterday, during the orientation of the newly appointed chairman of the University Council, Prof Joseph Nyasani, the MPs through their representative Charles Onyancha of Bonchari said they are committed to ensuring that the project succeeds. The legislators said it was a great honour for the region to have its own university, adding that more resources should be channeled to the institution to improve education in the area.

They said they had already identified 80 acres of land where constituent colleges would be set up to ensure that university programmes are distributed evenly for the benefit of the large number of students seeking to pursue different disciplines. Addressing staff and students, Onyancha appealed to students to embrace good leadership qualities for them to take up top positions.

Prof Nyasani said he shall ensure that the university is built through a strong foundation that would see it enjoy international collaboration. He said he will make the university an affiliate institution of other universities in Europe and America and called for cooperation from the teaching staff and students.
