MPs pool funds for new varsity

Residents of Gusii could soon get a second university college, thanks to the efforts of 10 MPs. The MPs from the region have agreed to contribute Sh5 million each from the Constituency Development Fund to buy land for the university, said Education minister Sam Ongeri.

“We have agreed to raise Sh50 million as start-up capital to buy land at Simbauti farm in Borabu District where the proposed university will be built,” Prof Ongeri said.

Local leaders would then approach the Government and donors to help build the university, the Nyaribari Masaba MP said. He said the recently established Kisii University was now meeting high demands of locals for degree courses. The minister was speaking during the burial of Prof Japheth Maranga at his Metamaywa Village in Borabu on Sunday. Prof Maranga was shot dead by gangsters.

Elsewhere, Kenyan universities have been asked to enhance partnerships with their Chinese counterparts to foster cooperation between the two countries. The Chinese ambassador to Kenya, Mr Zhang Ming, said a closer working partnership between the universities could help promote cultural integration.

Kiswahili

Speaking at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Mr Zhang said that as part of an academic exchange programme, Chinese universities will begin sending students to Kenya to learn Kiswahili. He said such programmes should be strengthened to give an opportunity to students from the two countries to benefit from closer ties.
