Help fight crime, Saitoti told at don’s burial

The Internal Security minister has been urged to help fight insecurity in the Kisii region. Speaking during the burial of Prof Japheth Maranga, who was killed by gangsters, five MPs and two judges expressed concern over rising cases of lawlessness.

“We want the Government to demonstrate that it has the capacity to deal with insecurity,” said Education minister Sam Ongeri. Others who echoed his sentiments included MPs Chris Obure, Wilfred Ombui, Walter Nyambati, George Nyamweya and judges R. Omollo and Samuel Bosire.

“Our people are having sleepless nights following the emergence of this gang, which is out to kill prominent and innocent people,” Prof Ongeri said after reading President Kibaki’s message of condolence. Mr Obure, the Roads minister, said that a chief in his Bobasi constituency was killed in a gang raid.

Mr Nyambati said a trader and his son were shot dead by the same gang when it struck in his Kitutu Masaba constituency. And the two Court of Appeal judges said they had also lost close relatives through gang raids.Mr Justice Bosire was related to Prof Maranga, who was shot by gangsters earlier this month.

Family members said the attackers were only interested in killing the lecturer as they declined to take money and spare his life. Prof Maranga was buried in Metamaywa, Borabu District on Sunday.
