Residents want traffic officers removed

Members of the public and Matatu operators in Nyamira district yesterday asked the government to remove all the traffic officers serving in the area saying that they were only taking bribes instead of executing their express duties. They accused the officers of taking bribes openly without any regard from members of the public traveling in the Matatus.

Speaking to reporters in Nyamira town, the members who were led by Joseph Atuya said it was disappointing that officers who are supposed to eradicate corruption were instead promoting it with impunity.Atuya said the move of demanding bribes has made Matatu owners to relax in maintaining their vehicles because they know that they could buy their freedom through bribery.

Atuya threatened to organize a demonstration against specific police officers whom he said were notorious in bribe demands. Contacted for comment, the Nyamira OCPD Njoroge Mwaura accused the Matatu operators and commuters of flouting the traffic rules.He blamed commuters for boarding the Matatus which are already full and also blamed the Matatu operators for not maintaining their Matatus to traffic standards.
