Drunken man jailed for beating up parents

A Gucha court has ordered a man to pay a Sh18,000 fine or serve 12 months imprisonment for housebreaking and stealing. Nyankieya Nyakundi Auka committed the offence on December 13, last year, at Nyabite village, Gucha. The charge read that the accused broke into a house belonging to David Omwoyo and stole Sh13,000.

The court heard that the complainant closed his shop at 8.30am and left for a church service. When he returned at 1.30pm, his shop had been broken into and the money stowed away.

He reported the matter and the suspect was arrested and found in possession of Sh6,010. He had bought clothes and a bag with the rest of the money. In mitigation, the accused prayed for leniency but Ogembo Senior Resident Magistrate, Lily Nafula said stealing was prevalent in the area and deserved a deterrent sentence. The recovered cash and clothes were presented as exhibits and later surrendered to the complainant.
