Police gunned down three suspected thugs and recovered a stolen vehicle following a dramatic one-hour chase on the Maai-Mahiu-Narok Road.
And in Masaba District, police have killed a man believed to be behind a series of killings and robberies in Kisii. In the Naivasha incident, two pistols and 11 bullets were recovered from the smartly dressed thugs after they succumbed to their injuries following a shoot-out at Kigecha.
However, four other suspects escaped in a second vehicle with Flying Squad officers in hot pursuit. The incident caused a major traffic snarl up on the busy road as motorists stopped to get a glimpse of the unfolding drama. Naivasha deputy OCPD Paul Kisang said the gangsters were in two cars heading to Narok where they intended to commit a robbery.
Mr Kisang said Nairobi-based officers trailed the robbers up to Mai Mahiu. "A chase ensued and on reaching Kigecha, the thugs engaged police in a shoot-out before three of them were felled," he said.
The deputy OCPD said four other suspects fled in separate vehicles. Kisang said the owner of one of the cars left behind had identified it as having been stolen from Nairobi. In the Masaba incident, police said four accomplices of the suspect escaped during the Tuesday night shoot-out. Acting on a tip-off, officers from Keroka Police Station raided the gang’s hideout at about 8.30pm as they were planning to commit a felony.
Police have linked the gang to a spate of robberies and murders that have rocked Kisii in the recent past. Masaba DC Alfred Mwandale, OCPD Lawrence Mwaura and Keroka OCS David Lagwade visited the scene yesterday and recovered pangas, axes and other weapons. On sensing danger, Mr Mwaura said, the gangsters opened fire at the police, but none of the officers was injured.
The incident comes barely a day after Mr Charles Marori, a resident, was shot in the shoulder when ten armed robbers raided his home at Miriri village of Kitutu Masaba constituency on Monday night.
