Govt to bring services closer to people

President Mwai Kibaki Tuesday said his Government is determined to take services closer to wananchi and has been creating new administrative units to ensure that goal is achieved.  Addressing a public rally at Masimba where he endorsed the creation of Masaba South District, President Kibaki said the increase in population has necessitated creation of new administrative units countrywide to ensure wananchi received adequate services from the Government.

"We are creating new districts from the old ones in all areas where population increase necessitate such a move. We are committed to ensuring that wananchi receive adequate services from their Government," President Kibaki said. On youth empowerment, the President said the Government initiated the Kazi Kwa Vijana programme so as to create employment for the youth and also enable them to effectively contribute to national development.

In this regard, the Head of State urged the youth in the newly created Masaba South District to join the Kazi Kwa Vijana programme and work hard to develop the area, adding that male and female youth should work together in development projects. "You should work hard in the Kazi Kwa Vijana projects so as to earn more and also contribute to the development of the area," President Kibaki said. President Kibaki also called on farmers in Masaba South District to take advantage of the Government's move to subsidize the cost of farm inputs by increasing production so as to double their earnings.

Citing the reduction of the cost of fertilizers from Kshs 6,000 to Kshs 2500 per a 50 kg bag, the President said the Government has moved in to ensure seeds retail at an affordable price to enable farmers reap maximum profit from their farms. "Ensuring that farming is profitable will enable farmers to produce more and make the country self-sufficient in terms of providing food for wananchi," President Kibaki said.

The Head of State said the Government is also rehabilitating roads in the large Kisii region, the same way it is doing in other parts of the country so as to ease the transportation burden on farmers and wananchi in general. Speaking during the occasion, Education Minister Prof. Sam Ongeri, who is also the area Member of Parliament, thanked the President for the development projects the Government has implemented in the area for the last six years.

The Minister, particularly, thanked President Kibaki for the construction of the Keroka-Nyangusu road, which he said was the main link to other districts in the region. Other speakers included Internal Security Minister Prof. George Saitoti, Roads Minister Franklin Bett, Assistant Ministers Omingo Magara, Richard Onyonka and Dr. Wilfred Machage among others. The President also addressed a mini rally at Nyangusu Market where he urged wananchi to live harmoniously with their neighbours from Transmara district as that was the only way of boosting interaction and rapid development.

On its part, President Kibaki said, the Government will remain steadfast in its quest to develop all parts of the country. In this regard, the President said the Government will look into the possibility of constructing an airstrip in the area so as to benefit horticultural farmers and also promote tourism. Speaking during the occasion, Public Works Minister Dr. Cris Obure assured President Kibaki that Gusii leaders from the area and their counterparts from Transmara had agreed to ensure that the two neigbouring communities lived together peacefully.

Later, President Kibaki addressed another rally at Kenyenya market where he announced the creation of Kenyenya district. President Kibaki also assured wananchi in the area that the Government will rehabilitate Kenyenya-Kamagambo road among other key roads so as to open up the area and accelerate development. Present were several Members of Parliament from the larger Kisii region including Assistant Minister Richard Onyonka, Joel Onyancha, Charles Onyancha, Gilbert Monda, James Gesami, Walter Nyambati and George Nyamweya among others.
