Minor jailed for theft of maize

A minor who stole maize worth Sh400 to buy uniform has been sent to a borstal institution for three years. The court heard that the accused stole 20 tins of maize the property of Wilson Nyaundo Moseti on March 5, at Magenche, Gucha. The complainant had locked his house and went to work in his farm.

At about 8am, he got information from a neighbour that someone had been seen in his homestead stealing maize. He rushed there and found the accused with the maize.
The minor pleaded guilty before Ogembo Senior Resident Magistrate Lily Nafula. The probation officer said the accused’s mother died leaving him under the care of his grandfather. He dropped out of school in form two after stealing Sh6,000 from his teacher.

"The boy has been portrayed as a truant who has joined bad company. There is general fear he may be lynched by members of the public," Okumu told the court. He will serve three years at Shikusa Borstal institution.
