Arsonist fined for punishing wife

A man who torched his houses to punish his wife over food has been fined Sh20,000 or six months imprisonment. Ogembo Senior Resident Magistrate Lily Nafula heard that Peter Nyagwachi Mogoi, 54, set on fire two grass-thatched houses valued at Sh10,000 belonging to Clemensia Kemuma.

He pleaded guilty to the offence committed on April 4, at Mokomoni, Gucha District. The accused went to the complainant’s home and after a quarrel; he beat her with a panga before torching the houses. The public tried to put out the fire in vain. The accused, fearing for his life, presented himself at Magenche Police Post.

Some ashes and pieces of wood were presented in court as exhibits. A social valuation report indicated that Mogoi arrived home drunk and demanded food. He refused to eat saying it was poorly cooked and lacked some ingredients. He said he wanted to punish his wife for not preparing his meals well.
