Several others are still trapped in the rubble with rescuers working frantically to free them amid fears that there may be deaths.
The injured were rushed to Kisii Level 5 Hospital. Reports indicate that the rescue operations are being hampered by lack of equipment as the rescuers have to rely o n graders from local contractors which are however inadequate. Eye witnesses claimed 7 workers had remained in the ill-fated four storey building while their colleagues went for lunch.
There were also claims that 4 handcart pushers playing a game of cards near the building may also have been buried in the rubble. A car owner who had just parked his vehicle near the building sustained injuries and had to flee from falling stones and debris from the building which is said to have been situated on a swamp.
A former civic leader who did not wish to be named claimed the building had been condemned but the owner went ahead with the construction.
The rescuers led by area OCPD Augustine Kimantiria managed to pull out one man alive from the building and rushed him to hospital. Relatives whose loved ones were believed to be still entrapped thronged the scene with some fainting from shock while others wailed loudly.
This is the second tragedy to hit the town in the recent past after 33 people perished in a grisly road accident near the same spot. There have been several incidents of buildings collapsing in the town, blamed on poor workmanship
