I’m not a fighter, says MP

Foreign Affairs assistant minister Richard Onyonka was on Friday charged with assaulting a man in Parliament. Mr Onyonka, who had earlier declined to take a plea and unsuccessfully challenged the move, denied assaulting Mr Titus Barongo Magara on November 13, 2008.

The assistant minister had challenged the charges saying the allegation should be forwarded to the Parliamentary Powers and Privileges Committee, chaired by House Speaker Kenneth Marende.

Alleged victim

But Chief Magistrate Gilbert Mutembei dismissed his application yesterday saying the offence was committed at a place near the court’s jurisdiction. Further, the magistrate said that although the offence was committed at Parliament Buildings, the alleged victim was not an MP. Mr Onyonka was released on a cash bail of Sh10,000 until August 6, when his case will be heard.
