Bomachoge by-elections campaigns come to close

With only a day to the Bomachoge by-election, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka led a strong team of PNU leaders to drum up support for the PNU candidate and immediate former area MP, Joel Onyancha.

In the Vice President's entourage were education minister Prof. Sam Ongeri, assistant ministers Nderitu Mureithi, MPs Walter Nyambati, Johnstone Muthama, Prof. Philip Kaloki, George Nyamweya, Wilfred Ombui and Jeremiah Kioni who all rallied the electorate to re-elect the former assistant minister to enable him complete the projects he had just started.

The leaders lauded Mr. Onyancha as 'an astute leader whose contribution was highly required in parliament'. Mr. Musyoka appealed to the residents to re-elect Mr. Onyancha saying that within the period he had been in Parliament he had proven that he was a focused, honest and humble leader whose main concern was with the development and prosperity of his constituents and the country.

The Vice President said the country was on the path to recovery from the ashes of the post-election violence, and needed the services of dedicated and patriotic leaders like Mr.Onyancha.

"The task of rebuilding this country has started in earnest, and we need the services of committed leaders to spearhead it towards our aspirations as enshrined in the Vision 2030", Mr. Musyoka said.

Mr. Musyoka urged the electorate to uphold peace and unity during the electioneering period and ignore party differences that could divide them. "Although you are in competition, you should not allow partisan and parochial party interests to drive a wedge between your unity, since after the elections you will still remain brothers and sisters", the VP urged them.

Mr. Musyoka warned the electorate against being misled with empty promises that whoever replaces Mr. Onyancha will be given a ministerial position, assuring them that Mr. Onyancha's seat was intact awaiting his re-election.

Meanwhile, while addressing his supporters in Kenyanya, Onyancha claimed that the court found no mistake on his side and instead threw the blame to ECK for the manner in which it handled the elections.

He accused some officials of the disbanded electoral commission who were not happy with his victory for working in cahoots with his opponents and tampering with the ballot boxes that made it impossible for the court to order a recount hence his being thrown out of parliament.

Accompanied by several MPs from Gusii land Onyancha urged his supporters to vote for him come Thursday to prove that indeed the courts had robbed the people of Bomachoge their victory. His close opponent Simion Ogari spent most of the last day meeting various groups.

The race for the seat which has attracted over 10 candidates has now narrowed down to Onyoncha and Ogari of ODM.

Meanwhile, Education minister Professor Sam Ongeri is urging residents of Bomachoge to embrace peace during the by election.

He said the chaos witnessed in 2007 should serve as a lesson to this nation that never again should violence be tolerated in any election. He termed voting as a one day exercise that should not be taken as a matter of life and death to divide the nation.

The minister said the by election was a litmus test for the Interim Electoral Commission to prove that it was beyond reproach given that one of the candidates in Bomachoge was a brother to one of the IIEC commissioners.
