Cardinal Otunga and St Catherine are new Kisii Copa Coca Cola champs

Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, and St Catherine Iranda are the new Copa Coca Cola junior football schools tournament champions in Kisii.

Iranda, coached by Innocent Siro, fell giants all the way to the finals to claim the girls’ title. In the ultimate clash, Iranda shocked pre-match favourites Mochengo Secondary 1-0 to win the tournament, thanks to a fortuitous strike from Divinah Ondima from outside the area.

In the semis, Iranda defeated Nyamira’s Gekonge 2-1 on penalties after the teams had battled to a barren draw during regular and extra time. Rosaria Ontonyi and Ondima scored for Iranda, while Esther Moses converted for Gekonge. In the other semi, Mochengo beat Rongo’s Oyugi Ogango 2-1, also on post-match penalties. Rebecca Otwori and Grace Mogotu scored for Mochengo, while Irene Omollo scored Oyugi Ogango’s lone spot kick.

Partisan Kisii crowd

Oyugi Ogango clinched the third spot after a 2-1 win over Gekonge. Hellen Onyoni and Jackline scored for Oyui Ogango, while Batsheba Martin converted for Gekonge. Cardinal Otunga, hitherto regarded as the dark horse, defied the hostile and partisan Kisii School crowd to hit the hosts 3-2 on penalties and lift the boys’ title. The teams were deadlocked 0-0 during regular and extra time. During the dramatic shootout, Cardinal Otunga’s skipper Dancun Arona saved Hesborn Obaka’s spot kick to silence the hostile crowd.

Dennis Omboga, Quinter Odhiambo and Obed Omari scored for the victors while Clinton Ondieki and Zack Omote scored for the hosts. The presence of Cardinal Otunga principal Zachary Nyariki inspired the players to victory. Winners in both categories received a Sh100, 000 shopping voucher, a trophy and gold medals while runners-up received a Sh50, 000 shopping voucher, trophy and silver medals.  Second runners up received a Sh25, 000 shopping voucher, a trophy and bronze medals.
