Kisii councils must wake up

Last week, President Kibaki honoured the best performing institutions, which saw Kenyatta University take the first position in the parastatals category.

But it was disgusting to see that out of the worst performing local authorities 10 were from Kisii. The civic authorities have both elected and nominated councillors, and the residents are wondering whether they did not make the right choice in the previous election or the civic leaders were asleep.

What a paradox that our councils are rated among the worst in the country yet our area is one of the most productive in the country!  Every month the councillors were paid salaries, but there was precious little to show for it by way of development.

We hope that next year, when the next assessment report is released, there will be marked improvement in the Kisii councils’ performance. I call upon the local MPs not to keep quiet while the councillors continue to sleep.
