Waiting for President in Vain in the Rain
Scores of local residents braved a heavy downpour waiting anxiously for the arrival of the head of state in the town where he was scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a Sh110 million pharmacy at the district hospital.
Those interviewed, however, said they were happy despite President skipping the town, the only referral public health institution in the area had been given a major facelift.
For the past three days and nights, workers were busy painting and cleaning the hospital. New linen was provided to patients and hospital beds neatly spread.
The town is in Ford-Kenya MP Henry Obwocha's West Mugirango constituency.
Addressing a large crowd at Ekerenyo divisional headquarters, the President said he could not visit the town because of the heavy rains.
The head of state who extensively toured the North Mugirango constituency accompanied by the area Kanu MP Joseph Kiangoi promised to tour the hospital and Nyamira town at a later date.
Meanwhile, Opposition leaders have reacted sharply to an assertion by President Moi that he wanted to leave the country's leadership in the hands of a younger person.
A section of MPs scoffed at the President's remarks. Opposition leader Mwai Kibaki, Ford Kenya MPs Henry Obwocha and James Magara said it was upon Kenyans to choose the leaders they wanted irrespective of age.
The President 77, had told a public rally in Ekerenyo market, Kisii: "If time is up for me, then the same applies to those other grey-haired old men who want to succeed me."
