Officer Hurt As Villagers Lynch Robber

A police officer was critically injured as he tried to rescue a suspected robber from a lynch mob in Nyamira District. Despite shooting in the air to scare away the attackers, the relentless mob eventually stoned the robber to death at Mabariri trading centre in Nyamusi Division.

The head of police in Nyamira, Mr Joseph Kimeli, said the lynched suspect was locked inside a shop by his accomplices after a raid.

"After looting the shop, the robbers hurriedly locked the premises from outside to prevent the owner from following them, unaware that they had left their colleague inside," he said.

The owner raised the alarm and villagers seized the suspect. However, the suspect escaped towards an Administration Police officer, who had responded to the distress call as the residents continued to throw stones.

The AP shot in the air several times but this did not deter the villagers from throwing the stones at the raider, who tightly held him.

Later, the injured AP fled for his dear life, leaving the suspect to be beaten to death. In Kisumu, a security guard at a bar clobbered a patron to death in a bid to quell a fight.

An argument broke out at Metro Club on the Kibos-Kondele road at 3am, resulting in the fight. The watchman then stepped in to separate the patrons. He hit one of the fighters with club and he fell down. The patron was rushed to Nyanza Provincial General Hospital where he died.

Nyanza provincial deputy police commander Joseph Ashimala said the watchman had been arrested. At the same time, police in Kisumu Tuesday recovered a firearm that was lost two weeks ago. A man who attempted to rob a shopkeeper in Nyalenda estate, fled and abandoned the gun.
