Kibaki campaign goes to Kisii
Four Cabinet ministers took President Kibaki’s re-election campaign to Kisii District and declared the split in ODM-Kenya a blessing. The ministers said the Opposition no longer posed a threat to the President’s bid for a second term. They announced plans to form a ‘super alliance’.
Mr Simon Nyachae, Mr Raphael Tuju, Prof George Saitoti and Mr Henry Obwocha, said they expected a further disintegration of the Opposition. They were referring to the recent split of the Orange party that saw a group led by Lang’ata MP, Mr Raila Odinga take over the original ODM, leaving Mwingi North MP, Mr Kalonzo Musyoka with ODM-Kenya. The ministers revealed that pro-Kibaki political parties were working on an elaborate coalition that would guarantee victory.
They said orange movement had lost direction, as its leaders were undermining each other. "The Opposition has no head or tail and as things are, it doses not pose a threat to us," said Obwocha. Saitoti said: "Those in the Opposition are masters of rhetoric who cannot be trusted with the country’s leadership. The country’s future can only be guaranteed with President Kibaki."
Tuju said other Government of National Unity partners should not view Narc-Kenya as a rival but a partner for a good cause."The parties supporting Kibaki’s re-election will get a way on how to move forward," said Tuju, who is the Narc-Kenya interim chairman. He said Narc-Kenya would not go to the elections alone, but with other Kibaki-friendly parties.
Nyachae said Kibaki’s re-election team was gathering steam and those the Opposition would only blame itself for failing to read the mood of Kenyans. "President Kibaki remains the man to beat in this year’s General Election and we are not joking about our commitment to have him re-elected," he said. The Roads minister, who had earlier hinted on a possibility of quitting elective politics, said he was still in the race.
The ministers spoke at Nyanturago sports ground in Nyachae’s constituency, during a funds-drive for the youth development fund. Saitoti and eight MPs drummed up support for Nyachae’e re-election. "Since Nyachae and his Ford-People party MPs joined the Government, the Government has been stable and we cannot afford to do without him in the next Parliament" said Saitoti.
