Asanyo Ousted As Kanu Boss

Kisii Kanu branch chairman Geoffrey Asanyo was yesterday sacked by its executive committee.

He was replaced by Public Health Minister Sam Ongeri.

But Mr Asanyo dismissed the development as illegal, saying a district party branch executive committee meeting could be convened only by the chairman or the secretary.

He carped by phone: "I was not present at the meeting. Who convened it? I cannot be party to decisions made in the streets."

But he himself took over the office in a night coup two years ago against Nyaribari Chache MP Simeon Nyachae.

Speaking in Nairobi, Prof Ongeri said he accepted the new position "if it is the majority's wish". He promised to work with residents to popularise the party.

The executive committee, which said it had the support of the party's national leadership, held a five-hour meeting to discuss Mr Asanyo's conduct. The meeting was chaired by Mr Asanyo's deputy, Mr Zachary Motari.

The committee also ruling party appointed activist Sam Nyamweya as branch secretary, replacing Mr Timothy Omato, who, however, remained a committee member.

The members accused Mr Asanyo of failing to articulate party policies effectively.

They claimed he had made the party unpopular in Kisii by failing to convene regular meetings.

Mr Asanyo was also accused of interfering in the running of the Kisii Municipal and Gusii County councils.

The resolutions were read by Mr Omato. The group claimed that President Moi had last week hinted that the Abagusii needed a credible leader to woo the people back to the ruling party.

Other changes included the appointment of former Cabinet Minister Andrew Omanga, Mr Charles Onyancha, Mr Richard Momoima Onyonka, Mr Peter Makori, Mr Lawrence Siringi and Mr Peterson Abuya as branch members.

Those retained included Mr Protus Kebati as treasurer, Mr David Nyakoi as assistant secretary, Mr Stanley Ondoro as assistant treasurer, Mr John Anunda as organising secretary and Councillor Grace Nyangaresi as women's leader.
