Group Pledges to Defend Nyachae

A Nakuru group has pledged to defend former former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae's farm from invasion by Kanu activists.

In a Press statement issued in Nakuru Town yesterday, the chairman of the Nakuru Abagusii Welfare Association, Mr. Charles Torori, warned of dire consequences if the Kanu leaders invade Mr. Nyachae's 10,000- acre farm in Mau Narok .

"We dare them to carry out their threats if they are men enough," said Mr. Torori.

Three Kanu activists - Mr. Andrew Yatich, Mr. Shadrack Kiptugen and Mr. Ateker Busii - were recently reported as threatening to mobilise Kanu members to invade Mr. Nyachae's farm.

This followed Mr. Nyachae's announcement that he would vie for the presidency in the next election.

They also threatened to wage a war against the Kisii community in the Rift Valley if it supported Mr. Nyachae's bid.

They accused Mr. Nyachae of abusing the President.

Yesterday, Mr. Torori said that the Kisii had a right to live and own property in the Rift valley.

He described the Kanu activists as "idlers who have nothing to offer Kenyans".

"They are out to make headlines so that they can justify the handouts they receive from their paymasters," he said.

Mr. Torori said they should be arrested for issuing inflammatory statements that could spark tribal clashes.
Mr. Torori urged Kenyans to support Mr. Nyachae for the top seat saying his record in both the civil service and as a minister proved that he had the leadership qualities to save the country from economic and social woes.

Mr. Nyachae's declaration last week has generated a lot of heat with some people opposing it and others backing it.

Many of his backers point to his good record in the civil service and in the Cabinet.
