Police investigate presence of outlawed 'sungusungu' and ‘chinkororo' vigilante groups

Police in Nyanza are investigating allegations that the outlawed ‘sungusungu' and ‘chinkororo' vigilante groups were being transported in police vehicles to bar ODM protestors from Gusii Stadium.
The Kenya News Agency reported that the two groups allegedly assaulted a journalist after he took pictures of them boarding a police vehicle in Kisii.
The agency quoted residents saying the dreaded groups, armed with crude weapons cordoned off Gusii Sports Stadium, barring anybody attempting to get into the stadium to set off the ODM-planned mass protests.
The residents claimed they have been under siege as the illegal gangs harassed and robbed some of them with traders claiming they had to close shop for fear that their premises might be ransacked by the gang.
Nyanza police boss Grace Kaindi condemned the attack on the journalist and asked him to make a formal complaint. She promised to issue a detailed statement later.
Area OCPD Augustine Kimantiria said he was unaware of police vehicles being used to ferry the outlawed gangs or that they had been hired to bar ODM demonstrators from the stadium.
Local DC Njoroge Ndirangu who chairs the district security committee could not be reached for comment as he was said to be attending a provincial security meeting in Kisumu.
Business however, went on as usual in other parts of the town with traders selling their wares unperturbed.
Gusii stadium serves as the regional ASK showground and is also used for private hire.
