Shabana Call Up 14 Nyanya Cup Players for Trials

Kisii-based Premier League side Shabana FC have identified 14 players from the Nyanya Cup soccer tournament, held in Nyamira, for trials. The technical bench, led by coach Henry Motego and the team manager Richard Otambo, have been attending the matches and identified the players.

"The players must attend training from today evening and compete for the few places remaining in the team," Motego said. The players are Fred Onundu, Philip Kamanda, Otiso Ombongi, Robert Motanya, James Mokaya, Jackson Temu, Mokamba Michora, and Simon Kamanda.

Others are, Richard Kombo, George Moruri, Jackson Ombongi, George Moruri, Jared Mose and Joel Moraro. "If the players impress me, I will enlist them in the team before the deadline for the registration of players," said Motego.

The coach, speaking at Nyamira during the tournament final, praised the high standards of football in the region and appealed to stakeholders to concentrate in age-group football.

Sironga Umoja FC narrowly edged out Kebirigo Township 3-2 to clinch the inaugural Nyanya Cup title.

Sironga took lead in the 24th minute through Philip Kamanda. Fred Onundu added the second in the 46th minute but a minute later, James Mokaya pulled one back for Kebirigo.

Zakayo Momanyi equalised for Kebirigo Township in the 49th minute but Kamanda struck the winner in the 70th minute in the match that was well handled by referee James Osindi. In the third place play-off, Siamani beat Ting'a United 3-0 on post-match penalties to take the third position. The teams tied 1-1 during regular and extra time. Timothy Nyandege officiated the match.

Otiso Ombongi put Siamani ahead in the 29th minute while Jared Orina equalised for Ting'a United in the 33rd minute.

During the penalty shootout, Henry Ndege, Jeff Marwanga and Eric Makworo struck for Siamani while Paul Gisemba, Joel Mararo and Jared Mose had their spot kicks saved.

A total of 34 teams participated in the tournament which was played in Nyamira and Nyamaiya divisions.
