Kisii Wins Nyanza Track Battle

Kisii District clinched the overall position as this year's Nyanza secondary schools athletics championships ended at Agoro Sare high over the weekend.

The victors led in both the men's and women's events, winning by 168 and 152 points respectively.

Gucha finished runners-up with a total of 305 points while last year's champions, Nyamira, were relegated to the third position with 298 points.

In the girls' 800 metres, Peris Monda of Kisii won in 1:58.02 ahead of younger sister Martha Monda (2:00.14).

Gucha's Christine Nyangaresi was third in 2:00.36.

In the boys' category, Nyamira's Ben Nyamota won the 800m race after clocking 1:52.16. Jared Ochengo (Kisii) was second in 1:52.25 while team-mate Justus Arubi finished third in 1:52.26.

Machuki Mogire of Kisii set a new record in the 10,000 m race after winning in 29:22.78 to shed off 58 seconds from last year's mark. Jason Mosoti of Nyamira came second in 29:31.82 while team-mate Boaz Mayaka was third in 29:50.56.

The boys 100m was a closely-fought battle with Kelvin Kiaka of Gucha winning in 11.04, only two seconds ahead of Kisii's Ben Nyasimi.

Another runner from Kisii Kepha Ogera was third in 11.28.
