Policeman Steals Show in Kisii

The police recruit was followed by John Thuo of HPTC who clocked 37:05.01 while Joseph Kiptum was third in 37:11.07.The fastest man in steeple chase this year, Paul Kipsiele Koech was humbled and relegated to the sixth position in 37:24.02.
Speaking after the race, Kitwara said he was initially not sure whether he would win when he registered. "When I saw the list of entrants I was taken aback going by the caliber of runners who entered but as the race got underway I gathered more energy and floored them," he added. He was upbeat that he would clinch the jackpot. "If all goes according to my plans, I shall win it," he noted.
The event was the 5th in a seven part series sponsored by KCB and the last for this year. The next event will be in Nyahururu on January 2, 2008. The senior women race which attracted the highest number of entrants since the series started was won by Grace Momanyi. A total of 68 women registered for the race.
Momanyi clocked 28:00.04 to win the event beating Millicent Gathoni to second place in 28:24.01 while Alice Mogire finished third clocking 28:40.01. Hellen Musembi of Machakos was fourth in 28:50.01 while race favourite Irene Limika of Armed Forces was fifth in 28:51.1.
Momanyi formerly based in Japan said: "I have been training on this course for a long time and I was confident I would win." Jackline Chebii, a 15 year old standard seven pupil at Sotik's Kapchepkoro primary school pulled a surprise when she won the 6km junior women's event.
She clocked 21:04.07 and was followed by Kamene Muia of Machakos who clocked 21:06.07 while race favourite and World 3000m junior champion Mercy Cherono was third in 21:12.02.
Edwin Kipkorir of Kaso clinched the junior men's title clocking 24:01.05 beating Josephat Bett to second position in 24:09.06. Local boy Isaiah Ondieki was third in 24:13:05. "The course was very tough and hilly but I thank God for giving me victory. I now want to win other races to that I enter the race for the Jackpot.
KCB' head of corperate affairs Kepher Bosire who was the chief guest said the bank was committed to promoting athletics in the country. He was accompanied by Athletics Kenya PRO Peter Angwenyi and Olympic gold medalists Ezekiel Nyamao and Charles Asati.
A total of 478 amateur and elite runners attended the event. The high turnover was attributed to AK's announcement that runners who participate in the series will be considered for the national cross country team that will represent the country in Edinburgh, Scotland
