Ruth Bosibori Nyangau has won global hearts

From Nyamira in Kisii to Daegu, South Korea, Ruth Bosibori Nyangau’s 19-year-old legs have returned sensational feats in 3,000m steeplechase this year.

A virtual unknown at the beginning of 2007, the shy Kenya Police recruit was toasted in the presence of the biggest names in global athletics as IAAF’s Rising Star of the Year at the association’s Gala Awards in Monaco.

Bosibori, who prefers neat plaited cornrows for her hairdo, began the path to being the junior women’s world record holder in her speciality at this year’s Nyanza South Provincial championships.

She easily won to qualify for the national trials for All Africa Games and it was at this event that Police recruited her. She won at those trials where national record holder, Eunice Jepkorir, was missing. Bosibori, a former Kebirichi Secondary School student, then stepped into the stage that announced her arrival on the international arena.

Running barefoot, she claimed gold in 9:31.99, the fourth fastest world junior time this year. Three days upon her return, she competed in the national trials for the Osaka World Championships in Athletics where she remarkably finished second to Jepkorir. In Japan, Bosibori improved her time to 9:31.20, the third quickest mark, while finishing fifth in the third qualifying round.
