Air tickets to Holland up for grabs in Kebirigo

Upcoming Kenyan athletes will have something extra to fight for in Friday’s Fifth Safaricom 10km Road Race in Nyamira district after the race’s organisers signed a deal at the weekend with the director of the Fortis Loopfestijn Voorthuizen that will see two top performers win tickets to run in the annual Netherlands 10km race.

Fortis Loopfestijn Voorthuizen race director, Gerard van de Veen, said the top men’s and women’s finishers in Friday’s Kebirigo race in Nyamira District will win a ticket each to next year’s Loopfestijn with the possibility of also featuring in a few more road races in Europe thereafter. However, van de Veen said the ones to qualify for the prize are only those who have never travelled abroad for competition.

“On behalf of the organisation of the Fortis Loopfestijn Voorthuizen, I’d like to confirm that we are making available one air ticket for a male athlete and one air ticket for a female athlete from the Kebirigo race,” van de Veen said.

Waiting for chance

“To be clear, the tickets will be for athletes who have never before competed outside Kenya. That means, for example, that if an athlete finishes fourth in Kebirigo has never competed outside Kenya before, he or she gets the ticket to compete in the 10 km race in Voorthuizen in July 2008,” van de Veen explained.

“Our organisation knows that several athletes from Kenya, often big talents, are waiting for a chance to compete in Europe or another parts of the world. With this price, we want to stimulate these athletes to post a good result in Kebirigo.” Meanwhile, two runners are favourites to clinch the Sh50,000 Safaricom Gusii Golden Series jackpot each in Kebirigo on Friday.

Athletics Kenya Nyanza South branch chairman Peter Angwenyi named two jackpot contenders as Jackline Nyangeri in the women’s category and Barnabas Sigei in the men’s category. Nyangeri finished second in Kisii and fourth in Gucha while Sigei finished second in Kisii and fifth in Gucha. They have six and seven points respectively. Runners with the highest points in the three races will get the Sh50,000 jackpot.
