Monica Otwori, making a maiden run on her home turf, overcame stiff opposition to win the 10,000 metres women’s title in the first day of the New KCC Athletics Tour meeting at the Gusii stadium on Friday.
Runners from Kenya Police and the armed forces dominated the first day as they entered most runners in Saturday's finals. The series is the third this season while the fourth will be held in Nakuru next weekend.
The Kenya Army athlete took 35:09.07 to win the tough race which saw many athletes dropping out midstream. Only eight runners finished the race. “I’m very happy that I have won my maiden race in my homeground,” said the jovial 26-year-old runner.
The Africa athletics championships scheduled for April 30 to May 5 in Addis Ababa while the national trials will be held on April 19 in Nairobi.
Mumbua Kioko of Posta finished second in 35:12.04 while Winfrida Kwamboka of Kenya Army came third in 35:36.08. Kellen Waithera an individual timed 35:55.04 to finish fourth. Irene Mong’are of Kebirigo 36:40.05 to finish fifth.
Richard Metet of Kenya Army won the men’s shot putt tile with a throw of 14.51m and was followed by David Limo of Meru (14.37m while Julius Metet of MAB was third (13.77). Most finals that were staged for Friday were pushed to Saturday due to the high number of entrants.
“In some events where we did not expect more entrants we had five heats. This is the highest attendance so far,” added Peter Angwenyi the Athletics Kenya PRO.
