President takes campaigns to Gusiiland today
A dispatch from the Presidential Press Services said the Head of State will be expected at Chebilat at 10am where he will be received by local leaders led by Cabinet minister Simeon Nyachae. He will then embark on a meet-the-people tour before addressing a public rally at Gusii stadium in the afternoon.
Nyanza provincial security team led by local PC Paul Olando yesterday toured the area to make sure all was well ahead of the tour. This will be the President’s second visit to the region since he took over power. Kisii Town was yesterday awash with President Kibaki’s re-election posters and fliers as municipal council workers spruced the streets.
The President’s visit comes barely a week after Mr Nyachae and former Cabinet minister Prof Sam Ongeri and football administrator Sam Nyamweya buried their differences to campaign for Kibaki’s re-election. The coming together of the leaders is a boon to President Kibaki, who for many years has been voted by for the Gusii people save for last General Election when they overwhelmingly voted for Ford People’s presidential candidate Mr Nyachae.
Supporters of President Kibaki have been trumpeting on his development record saying more is expected if he is re-elected. Deputy Press secretary for Kibaki Tena lobby group Dismas Mokua said the unity of Gusii people was a pointer that Mr Kibaki would reap majority votes from the region. Sources told the Nation that among the issues the President is expected to address are runaway crime in the area and poor road network in the rural areas. The leaders are expected to demand a province.
The President will make another foray into the region in November, according to his handlers in the region.
