Fake Seeds Unearthed in Kisii
The Kisii acting police boss Samuel Amayi, who led his officers in raiding the stores at Oyugis town in Rachuonyo district said they impounded ready for sale seed worth Sh4.6 million.
Huge consignment, he said had already been sold to farmers in Nyamira, Rachuonyo, Kisii and Homabay districts in the past month.
The police arrested prominent trader and four of his employees who had locked themselves in the targeted stores.
The conman's equipment of trade among them, a colouring liquid, a printing machine and empty containers with Kenya Seed seals.
They also recovered already packed 2 kilograms of the treated maize with bales of untreated cereals from the trader's rural home.
Area DC Osman Warfa cautioned farmers in former South Nyanza to be wary of conmen who were capitalizing on the on going planting season to save them from being tricked into going for fake seeds.
Mr Warfa was speaking at Gusii Stadium during this year's Jamhuri Day celebration and urged farmers to purchase the seed from known agents.
