Rural cock to begin crowing in town

This year could not have started on a better note for the small and fairly unknown band from the Kisii.
The rural Bana Sungusia group of Nyamira has just disproved the Kiswahili saying that a rural cock does not crow in the city.

Preparing to move its base to Nairobi by next month, Sungusia achieved one of its greatest feats ever -- performing at one of the most prestigious venues in the city.

Last Sunday, the group, led by Edwin Momanyi, better known among his fans as Mr Boss, was at the five-star Hotel InterContinental for its debut at the Sunday brunch.

He played to a more sophisticated and diverse audience.

It was one of the greatest breaks for the band, which is used to performing at the halls of rural shopping centres and villages. However, in the past, the group has occasionally performed in Nairobi during Gusii theme nights at spots such as Sarova Panafric Hotel, Carnivore Restaurant and Egesa East Villa.

In Nyanza, they have performed at spots like Inkas Makuti Hotel of Sondu and Armstrong Bar of Kisii, besides home spot Nyamira Hotel.

Known for such hit songs as Nyabeta, Lady Nyaboke, Mr Sungusia and My Boss, Bana Sungusia has built up confidence to showcase its prowess, especially with its fast-paced benga, which is dominated by lilting guitar lines and high-pitched vocals.

Its performance is enjoyed and appreciated by crowds more accustomed to jazz and classical music.

Momanyi says the last show was prelude to more he and his group expect to offered as from next month in Nairobi.
"Its been a promising start to performances this year and we hope for more of this kind," he said.

The band was invited to perform by the Hotel Intercontinental management as part of the efforts in diversifying the Sunday Brunch shows. Some of those who team up with Momanyi include singers Joseph Nyakweba, Bernard Onsongo, guitarists Job Mayenga and John Omwenga.

The group has so far produced 14 albums since it was formed in 1996. Their debut album, Esabari Keroka, made them gain popularity in the whole of the Kisii area.

Their latest VCDs include Mr Sungusia, Mokoyone and Lady Nyaboke.

Other popular Kisii musicians include veteran Christopher Monyoncho's Nyamwari, Bonyakoni Kirwanda and Embarambaba.
