Police Save Five From Lynch Mob

Police in Kisii yesterday saved five suspected witches from being killed by marauding lynch mobs.

The Gesonso Police Station officers, acting on a tip-off, arrived moments before a charging crowd could pounce on the four women and a man, all elderly.

The suspects were released after Inspector James Nyabuto pleaded with the villagers to do so, during the incident at Bonyando."I beg you to spare their lives and promise that we shall take them to court as soon as possible," Nyabuto told the crowd.

The suspects were then quickly bundled into a Land Rover and driven to Kisii Police Station, leaving the crowd still baying for their blood.

The incident is the latest in a wave of killings that has hit the district. Last week, four suspected witches were lynched in Keumbu location and 10 houses set ablaze.
