Ford People presidential candidate, Mr Simeon Nyachae on Tuesday called for peaceful campaigns country-wide. Talking in Kisii, Nyachae said all Kenyans have the obligation of protecting the country's peace and prosperity. He said some leaders were bent on perpetrating violence for the sake of personal aggrandisement during electioneering. "Ford People will stick to peace for the sake of Kenya's future which is more important than anything else," he stated.
The immediate former Nyaribari Chache MP however took issue with the Kanu leadership saying some of them were hiring youths to confront their rivals. Nyachae on the other hand indicated that he has acquired wealth through hard work and not corrupt indulgences. He said he ventured into serious business as early as 1954 when he initiated a posho mill and a bread bakery at Nyanturago market in his constituency.
"The political leaders trying to insinuate that I could have gotten wealth through corrupt deals are the same people with dubious records," Nyachae said. He pointed out that when he mooted the idea of leaders declaring their wealth, some of the very politicians attacking him never supported him about it. "If those leaders are honest enough, let them table such ideas in the next Parliament so that Kenyans can know who are the corrupt leaders," he added.
Nyachae in the meantime said all political parties should follow the Electoral Code of Conduct to the letter throughout the electioneering period. Separately, National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) officials from Nyamira District yesterday unleashed a scathing attack on Nyachae, adds Evans Nyakundi.
They accused him of being used by Kanu to wreck the opposition. The officials said Nyachae had sensed defeat in the residential race and was fighting Narc which, they claim, has the upper hand, in order to pave the way for a Kanu win.The officials who were led by the Nyamira Narc District Elections Co-ordinator, Mr Frederick Motio, told Nyachae to keep off Narc affairs and concentrate on the affairs of his little-known Ford People party. They wondered why Nyachae who initially has been a critic of the ruling party has now turned against Narc. They said Kenyans know very well from the past general elections, that Nyachae has never decamped from Kanu and as a result, his efforts to frustrate Narc from forming the next government will not succeed.
Speaking to reporters in Nyamira town yesterday, they supported Raila Odinga's recent attack on Nyachae saying the latter was a political spoiler and should be rejected by all Kenyans. They asserted that the political opinion as to the who will win in the race for the Presidency was accurate. They challenged Nyachae to come up with his own opinion poll. They urged members of the Abagusii community and other Kenyans who want genuine change to back Mwai Kibaki for the Presidency as he was the only serious contender.
They claimed that if Uhuru Kenyatta is elected as the next president, he will be subjected to manipulation by his political mentor, President Moi.
