Obwocha loses West Mugirango seat to rival

Planning minister Mr Henry Obwocha has lost his West Mugirango seat. ODM’s Dr James Gesami beat Obwocha, an ally of Roads minister, Mr Simeon Nyachae, who also lost the Nyaribari Chache seat.

Gesami garnered 13,015 votes, against Obwocha’s 12,806. Mr Fred Makamari of Safina got 2,070 while Mr Dennis Abincha of ODM-Kenya polled 1,306 votes.

Obwocha and Nyachae were the only Cabinet ministers in Kibaki’s Government, from Gusii. In the presidential race, Kibaki got 26,014 votes against Mr Raila Odinga’s 17,621 votes. Mr Kalonzo Musyoka managed 278 votes.

Obwocha conceded defeat and shook hands with Gesami, saying he respected the people’s wishes. "West Mugirango people have spoken through the vote and I must respect their verdict. I thank them for giving me a chance to serve them," he said.
