Kisii police boss says no suspects being held

Kisii OCPD, Augustine Kimantiria says no Administration police officers (AP's) are being held by Kisii police on suspected possession of fake ballot papers.

Kimantiria clarified that the police division was receiving reinforcements from outside to assist in maintaining security in Thursday's general elections.

He disclosed that the national exercise required about 900 police officers to man over 450 polling centers who were not available.

The government went public on the gazettement of special police officers to beef up security during this year's general elections and has since transported the officers to their duty stations using official and public transport.

Kimantiria refuted claims from Parliamentary aspirants, Omingo Magara -South Mugirango, Dr.Robert Monda and Haron Bogita -Nyaribari chache, that five AP's in a Nissan matatu with occupants were in their custody after being caught with fake ballot papers.

According to the area police boss, some officers on transit had called at the station and had been advised to spend in town overnight, since they were not armed.

He assured the residents that police would ensure their security during the polling day and dismissed allegations that the officers would condone vote rigging.

The candidates insisted on their claims that the AP's had been intercepted with the fake ballot papers and that they were released unconditionally from the cells for accomadation at the AP's lines.

Magara, also alleged that their claims were vindicated by the mention of AP's in the scheme to tamper with the elections and that the OCPD could be innocent since they were from a different department.

The ODM parliamentary candidate said nothing would stop determined Kenyan voters from achieving free and fair elections in spite of attempts to rig the exercise.
